Mind in its natural state is a tool and in order to work properly it must be in a certain context and this context is the emotions. The mind is not separate from the emotions at all, but an emotion can take control of the mind if it becomes too powerful. If you are afraid of something you may get stressed out, get depressed or even panic attack.
You are controlling your mind but if your mind becomes too powerful it will take over your emotions. Fear based thoughts lead people to self-destructive behavior, like acting out on anger or hate, even if they do not want to hurt themselves or others.
